Tan Chunrui
Tan Chunrui started learning violin at age 6 and has studied with Lynette Lim, Zhang Zhen Shan and Chan Tze Law. She was a member of the Singapore National Youth Orchestra violin section and obtained her Diploma in violin performance at age 19.
With a strong interest in both science and music, she went on to pursue dual degrees in music and chemistry at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. She studied with Dr. Carol Ruzicka from the Cleveland Institute of Music and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Music and Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with honours in 2006. In her final year in university, she was selected to perform Vieuxtemps Violin Concerto No. 5 with the Case Western Reserve Symphony Orchestra. She has also participated in the Savolinna Music Academy summer festival, where she took violin and chamber coaching lessons with Professor Mark Gothoni.
Chunrui currently freelances with various orchestras and ensembles, including the Metropolitan Festival Orchestra, Orchestra of the Music Makers, Hallelujah Oratorio Society and The Philharmonic Orchestra. She also serves in her local church as a musician.
Chunrui finds meaning and value in seeing each student grow and develop in the enjoyment of music, and hopes to inculcate a strong musical foundation so that they will be able to continue music-making throughout the various seasons of their lives. She believes that learning violin is not only about playing the instrument well, but also about developing perseverance, discipline, active listening, and the ability to work with others in a team. These skills are useful for all of life, and it is her hope that each and every learner will grow into these skills, enjoy the process of music-making and cultivate a life-long appreciation for the arts.
